Sept. 19, 2007
SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State volleyball team will be looking for its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the 2007 season when it plays host to Gannon at 7 p.m. Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. As part of the "Believe in Blue" Campaign, the first 100 spectators at Friday's match will receive a free "Believe in Blue" wristband. All spectators may participate in the Upper Crust Pizza Serving Contest. The first contestant to serve and hit the pizza box will win a free pizza. The contest takes place between Games 2 and 3 during all Laker volleyball matches throughout the season. The Lakers (4-9 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) also play host to Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. Sunday as part of a five-match homestand. They competed on the road during the first four weeks of the season. LSSU is coming off a 3-0 loss at 11th-ranked Grand Valley State and a 3-1 loss at Ferris State on Sept. 13 and 14, respectively. Gannon (4-6 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) and Mercyhurst (12-3 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) both suffered 3-0 setbacks to Findlay and Ashland last week and are also seeking their first league wins. Senior Jamie Groos, who has been adjusting to the switch from middle hitter to outside hitter this season, leads the Lakers in kills with 140 and averages 3.04 kills per game. Sophomore Sara Hess is second in kills with 121 and leads in attack percentage at .221. Junior setter Erin McLain is ninth in the GLIAC in assists per game at 9.13, while sophomore libero Jessica Ewer is third in digs per game at 5.54. |
