Lakers edge Timberwolves in volleyball showdown

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State took an early 7-4 lead in Game 5 and held on for the 15-13 win to sew up a five-set victory over Northwood during a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

LSSU defeated Northwood, 30-25, 30-32, 30-25, 24-30, 15-13 and improved its record to 6-11 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC.

The Lakers are 2-2 during their recent homestand, which concludes with a match at 1 p.m. Sunday against Saginaw Valley State.

Ali Jones totaled eight kills in the first two games to get LSSU off to a hot start. After leading through the opening set, the Lakers led Game 2 until Northwood came from behind to tie it, 19-19. The Timberwolves (14-4 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) also scored the last three points of the set to come back from a 30-29 deficit.

Jones served the final four points of Game 3, while LSSU's Sara Hess had the strong arm and totaled six kills. Jones also contributed four big kills, and Brishia Stroven added two in Game 5.

Jones finished the match with 14 kills, a .222 attack percentage and two aces. Jamie Groos followed with 13 kills, 12 digs and two block solos, and Hess had 10 kills and two block assists. In addition to totaling 41 assists, setter Erin McLain had seven kills, 10 digs and one ace. Libero Jessica Ewer had 33 digs.
