SVSU rebounds to win five-set match

SAULT STE. MARIE - A Saginaw Valley State volleyball team that lost 2-15 in Game 5 at Northern Michigan on Saturday rebounded to win 15-5 in Game 5 Sunday at Lake Superior State.

SVSU defeated LSSU, 30-17, 26-30, 30-23, 19-30, 15-5. The Cardinals improved to 14-7 overall and 3-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Lakers fell to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC.

LSSU junior Brishia Stroven totaled five kills in Game 3 and led the Lakers with a career-high 17. She had a .400 attack percentage for the match, and also contributed five digs, one solo block and one block assist.

Sara Hess added 12 kills plus three blocks for the Lakers, and Jamie Groos had 11 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Setter Erin McLain totaled 50 assists and eight digs, and libero Jessica Ewer had 32 digs.

SVSU edged LSSU in kills, 70-65, and totaled seven service aces to LSSU's two. Lake Superior State, however, had a 10-9 block advantage, and posted a .236 team attack percentage compared to the Cardinals' .227.
