SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's volleyball team took on one of the nation's top-rated squads on Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium with members of LSSU's 1978 Hall of Fame team in attendance.

Eighth-ranked Grand Valley State defeated Lake Superior State, 30-20, 30-24, 30-15 to maintain its perfect record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. GVSU improved to 23-2 overall and 13-0 in the GLIAC, while LSSU dropped to 7-17 overall and 2-10 in league play.

The match was part of Great Lake State Weekend festivities. LSSU also plays host to Ferris State at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Lakers will celebrate Senior Day and Parents Day when they take on the Bulldogs.

The 1978 Laker volleyball team will be inducted into the LSSU Sports Hall of Fame during a luncheon on Saturday. That squad finished 28-7-1 overall and 10-0 in the GLIAC.

Sara Hess and Ali Jones had five kills each to lead Lake Superior State. Erin McLain finished with 11 assists, and Ashley Purvis had eight. Jessica Ewer totaled 10 digs.
