SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State rallied from behind in Games 1 and 2, but came up a bit short and suffered back-to-back 30-28 losses during Sunday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match against Ferris State. The Bulldogs also won Game 3, 30-19. During Game 1, FSU out-scored LSSU 7-1 to build a 25-19 lead, but Laker Sara Hess served seven straight points to give LSSU a 26-25 lead and force the Bulldogs to call a timeout. Lake Superior State carried the momentum until losing the serve with a 28-27 lead. Ferris State tied it, 28-28, on the sideout and served out the game. The scenario was similar in Game 2 as LSSU fell behind 27-22, but came back to tie it, 28-28. The Bulldogs took the last two points to take the 2-0 match lead. LSSU's Ali Jones totaled eight kills through the Lakers' first two games. Hess finished with 10 kills and a .292 attack percentage for the day. Erin McLain totaled 18 assists and seven digs, and Ashley Purvis had nine assists. Jessica Ewer led in digs with 12, followed by Jamie Groos with 11. Groos also totaled five kills. LSSU introduced the volleyball parents and honored seniors Groos and McLain prior to Sunday's match. The Lakers will play their final home match at 7 p.m. Thursday against Michigan Tech. LSSU dropped to 7-18 overall and 2-11 in the GLIAC. FSU improved to 18-8 overall and 10-5 in the GLIAC. |
